St. Mary's School BIGBAND

We are  a youth music  ensemble playing variety of jazz  standards and swing tunes. We count some 25 musicians aged 11-18 years. Our members are mostly students of St. Mary's School in Aalborg, Denmark.  It is a more than 100 years old private Catholic institution of primary education  - one of the best in our country. The school has got 240 students from preschool to 10th grade.

The Big Band  consists  of the  saxophone section with alto, tenor and baritone saxes, the  brass section (trombones and trumpets)

and the rhythm section  (piano/keyboard, bass and drums). The actual composition can be seen HERE

The   Big Band's purpose is twofold. The main task is to work with the musical, creative and social skills of our students.  On the other hand we are the  proud ambassador of St. Mary's School . We enrich the cultural image of the  city of Aalborg, the capital  of  North Jutland, Denmark .

The Band was established in 1997 and later complemented by the Junior Big Band which acts as  a seperate ensemble with programme for younger and less experienced children. Both bands are conducted by  the teacher, composer and musician  Gert Nørgaard.
The PARENTS' COMMITTEE is responsible for organisational matters. It is composed by the conductor, the school principal, and a number of parents of  the Big Band members.

The musical experiences playing with schoolmates has been supplemented with cultural through the band's frequent travel activities. Since 2001, the band has played concert tours in Germany, Austria, Italy, France, Poland, 3 times in the U.S., Iceland and Switzerland.
